Understanding Cardiovascular Risk

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) refers to conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including heart attacks and strokes. This calculator uses the Framingham Risk Score, a widely used assessment tool that estimates your 10-year risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Risk Categories:

  • Low Risk (<10%): You have a lower chance of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.
  • Moderate Risk (10-20%): You have a moderate chance of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.
  • High Risk (>20%): You have a higher chance of developing cardiovascular disease in the next 10 years.

Key Risk Factors:

  • Age and Gender: Risk increases with age, and patterns differ between men and women.
  • Blood Pressure: Higher blood pressure increases cardiovascular risk.
  • Cholesterol Levels: Higher total cholesterol and lower HDL ("good") cholesterol increase risk.
  • Smoking: Smoking significantly increases cardiovascular risk.
  • Diabetes: Having diabetes increases your risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Family History: A family history of premature heart disease increases your risk.
